About Brian
Brian T. Murphy, MS, LPC-MHSP
I’m a licensed psychotherapist in Alabama and Tennessee, offering therapy for adults, couples, families, and groups. I also see teens on a case-by-case basis.
My clients face a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma (PTSD), self-acceptance, grief, chronic pain, relationship struggles, professional burnout, spirituality concerns, gender and sexuality issues, and addiction or anger management.
My Approach
I practice Relational Psychodynamic Therapy, which explores how our past and present relationships shape who we are — including the healing relationship between therapist and patient.
My approach draws on psychoanalytic theory, existential philosophy, and somatic awareness.
I often tell my clients: We are wounded in relationship, and we heal in relationship.
My hope is to join you in exploring what that healing might look like for you — within your inner world, your relationships, and our work together.
Training and Experience
I received advanced training from the Contemporary Psychodynamic Institute in Seattle, WA, and continue ongoing consultation in relational psychotherapy.
I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) — an evidence-based approach used to heal and process trauma, resolve stuck behavioral patterns, and integrate painful memories.
Professional affiliations include:
Nashville Psychotherapy Institute
Contemporary Psychodynamic Institute
National Board of Certified Counselors
American Counseling Association
American Academy of Psychotherapists
Areas of Focus
I provide therapy for adults and couples in Birmingham, Alabama, with a focus on trauma, relationships, grief, and major life transitions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to each client’s needs. I offer in-person sessions in the Birmingham area—including Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Cahaba Heights, and nearby neighborhoods—as well as telehealth therapy for clients across Alabama.
A Little More About Me
Before becoming a counselor, I spent many years in the music industry as a producer and songwriter — a creative background that continues to shape how I listen and connect with others.
Outside the therapy room, I love spending time with family and friends, being outdoors (especially around a campfire), and exploring the world by motorcycle.
Birmingham is my hometown, and after fifteen years in Brooklyn and Nashville, I’m grateful to be back home in Alabama. I appreciate the South for all its wonderful complexities and contradictions — and I look forward to meeting you exactly where you are.
